The highly anticipated film “All We Imagine As Light,” which won the Grand Prix award at this year’s 77th Cannes Film Festival, is set to make its Indian debut on Saturday. The movie will be screened in limited theaters across Kerala before a wider release in major cities throughout India.
Directed by Payal Kapadia, an alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), “All We Imagine As Light” tells the story of two women from Kerala who move to Mumbai in pursuit of their dreams. The film’s title in Malayalam is “Prabhayay Ninachathellam.”
Kapadia expressed her excitement about the film’s release, saying, “It feels appropriate for Kerala to be the first state to see our story unfold on the big screen.” She added, “I am thrilled that audiences across India will soon have the opportunity to experience this unique narrative.”
The production house Spirit Media, founded by Rana Daggubati of “Baahubali” fame, has acquired exclusive distribution rights for the film in India. The Indian producers are Zico Maitra (Chalk and Cheese Films) and Ranabir (Another Birth), who also served as the cinematographer on the film.
“All We Imagine As Light” stars Kani Kusruti as Prabha, a Mumbai nurse whose life is turned upside down when she receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband. Divya Prabha plays Anu, Prabha’s roommate and colleague who struggles with finding privacy in the bustling city to spend time with her boyfriend. Chhaya Kadam portrays Parvati, a widow facing eviction by property developers.
Rana Daggubati highlighted the significance of the release: “We are proud to bring this incredible film to Indian audiences. Starting with Kerala, where two of our main characters originate from, we believe it is a fitting tribute to their journey.”
The film’s success at Cannes has been historic. It became the first Indian film ever to win the Grand Prix award and was also the first in 30 years to be part of the European galas main competition.
“All We Imagine As Light” promises to captivate audiences with its powerful storytelling, showcasing the shared dreams and struggles of characters from diverse backgrounds as they navigate life in Mumbai. The limited release in Kerala marks a significant milestone for both the film and its creators.
